About Tungsten Carbide
Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest metals used in jewelry. It's much harder than titanium, gold, or platinum, holds a mirror polish that doesn't dull from daily wear, doesn't bend out of round, and resists scratching from almost anything you'll encounter day-to-day.
The trade-off is that tungsten is harder than it is tough. A direct hammer-strike or a fall onto concrete from height can chip it. In an emergency it can be cracked off the finger with standard ER tools, which is actually a safety advantage compared to gold or platinum.
Tungsten rings don't trigger nickel allergies, don't tarnish, and don't oxidize. The ORDOVICIAN holds the same finish years into wear as it has on day one.
About the Dinosaur Bone Inlay
The inlay in the ORDOVICIAN is real fossilized dinosaur bone, sometimes called gembone. It's the mineralized remains of bone that's been buried for tens to hundreds of millions of years. As groundwater carries minerals through the original bone over geological time, the organic material is gradually replaced by silica and other minerals, locking in the cellular pattern of the original bone in stone.
What you see in your ring is the cross-section of that mineralized bone, with every cell, every blood-vessel channel, and every growth line preserved in color. Color varies by mineral content: red and orange tones come from iron oxides, blue and green from copper or chromium, and grays and browns from manganese and silica. Because every ring is cut from a different piece of fossil, no two patterns are alike.
Care: the dinosaur bone inlay is real stone, durable but treatable like any gemstone. Avoid sharp impacts on the inlay, don't soak in chemicals, and give it a wipe-down with a soft cloth rather than abrasive cleaners. The metal band beneath protects the fossil from everyday wear.

Wipe the ORDOVICIAN with a soft cloth. That's the core care routine. Tungsten doesn't tarnish, doesn't oxidize, and doesn't lose its polish from daily wear. Yes. Both tungsten and ceramic rings can be safely removed in an emergency. Hospitals use a tool that cracks the band cleanly off the finger without needing to cut through it. This is actually a safety advantage over gold or platinum, which require more time-consuming cutting.

What's Not Covered
The warranty covers how we built the ring, not what happens to it after you take it home. The following aren't covered:

How does inside engraving work?
Free with every order. You can engrave text, dates, coordinates, fingerprints, handwriting, signatures, or a custom image. Standard fonts are included; if you want a specific font or custom artwork, send us a sample after checkout and we'll match it. Engraving is permanent and laser-etched, not stamped.
Do you offer custom sizes or widths?
Yes, within reason. We can do half sizes, sizes below 5 and above 15, and non-standard widths on most styles. Reach out before ordering with what you need and we'll quote the timeline. Some materials (ceramic, full-engraved patterns) have manufacturing limits we'll be upfront about.
Which material is right for me?
Tungsten is hardest and most scratch-resistant; great for daily wear and active hands. Titanium is lighter, hypoallergenic, and softer in feel. Ceramic is hard like tungsten but lighter and a true permanent black. Solid 14k gold is softer than tungsten and will pick up character marks over time, which most buyers like; pick gold if you want a traditional precious metal. What Tungsten Carbide Is
Tungsten carbide is an industrial-grade metal originally developed for cutting tools and high-wear applications. When refined for jewelry, it produces a wedding band that's harder, denser, and more wear-resistant than gold, platinum, or titanium. It rates about 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, which puts it just below diamond and roughly four times harder than steel.
For a wedding band you'll wear every day for the next forty years, that hardness is the whole point.
Why People Choose It
- Scratch-resistant. Tungsten holds its finish under daily wear in a way that precious metals can't. Gold scuffs, platinum dulls, tungsten doesn't.
- Substantial weight. Tungsten is nearly twice as dense as steel. The ring has real presence on the finger, which most people read as quality.

The Tradeoff Worth Knowing
Tungsten's hardness is also its only real limitation. Where gold or platinum will bend under a sharp impact, tungsten can crack or shatter. This is rare in normal wear, but it's worth understanding before you buy.
Two practical things follow from this:
- It can't be cut off the finger with traditional ring saws. In an emergency, a hospital uses a small tool to crack the ring at two points, which removes it cleanly. Most ERs are familiar with this.
- Resizing isn't done by stretching. If your size changes, we replace the ring through the Aydins Lifetime Sizing Program rather than try to bend it. It's how the category works.
Comfort Fit, Explained
Every Aydins tungsten ring features a comfort-fit interior. The inside of the band is gently domed rather than flat, which reduces friction on the finger and keeps the ring sitting smoothly even when your hand swells slightly (from heat, humidity, exercise, or long flights).

Plated Finishes (Gold, Rose Gold, Black)
Some of our tungsten rings are finished with an ion-plated (IP) coating in gold, rose gold, or black. The plating is bonded to the tungsten core through high-energy ion deposition, which makes it considerably more durable than electroplating. It's designed for daily wear and rated to resist scratching, fading, and wear better than painted or anodized finishes.
To extend the life of any plated finish:
- Avoid extended chlorine exposure (pool, jacuzzi)
- Avoid harsh chemicals (bleach, solvents)
- Clean with mild soap and water, not abrasive cleaners or ultrasonic cleaners
Care & Cleaning
- Wipe down with mild soap and warm water, dry with a soft cloth.
- Skip the ultrasonic cleaners and chemical jewelry dips. Tungsten doesn't need them, and plated finishes don't tolerate them well.
- Take the ring off for chemical exposure: pool chlorine, harsh cleaners, certain solvents.
- Otherwise, wear it. Tungsten is built for everyday life. That's the whole point of the metal.
