Lesson 10 · Metals & Finishes · 42 seconds

10K is not 10 percent. Karat counts gold out of 24.

A karat number is the share of gold by weight, in twenty-fourths. 24K is pure gold. 14K is 14 of 24 (about 58.3%). The rest of the alloy is other metals, added for strength and color.

What this lesson shows

Karat is a mix, not a scale from worse to better.

A karat stamp is the maker's claim about what the alloy contains. It is not a lab test on the specific piece. Higher karat is more gold, so softer and warmer in color; lower karat is more alloy, so harder and often paler or cooler.

Three quick takeaways

What to actually do when you shop

  • Convert the stamp to a share: 10K = 41.7%, 14K = 58.3%, 18K = 75%, 24K = 100%. Everything else in the alloy is another metal.
  • Choose by use. For a daily-wear band, many people prefer 14K for a balance of color and durability; 18K reads warmer and softer; 10K reads harder and often paler.
  • Treat the stamp as a claim, not proof. A reputable jeweler and a certificate matter more than a number alone.

The pendant and its 14K mark in the lesson are a generic teaching illustration. Not a photograph of a specific Aydins product. The lesson uses an AI-generated narration voice (Holden preset), 3D-rendered models and some AI-generated supporting footage. See the campaign manifest for full disclosure.

14K does not mean 14 out of 100. Karat counts gold in twenty-fourths, by weight. 24K is pure gold. 14K is 14 parts gold out of 24, about 58.3 percent. 10K is about 41.7 percent, and 18K is 75 percent. The rest is other metals, added for strength and color. Higher karat is not automatically better. It is a different mix. And a karat stamp is the maker's claim, not a lab test. Check the karat. Then choose the piece that suits you.
