Lesson 28 · Necklaces · 34 seconds

Why your chain will not fit your pendant

A thin chain may still not fit a pendant: the widest part that must pass through may be the end ring or clasp. Check the bail's inside opening against the whole end fitting, including its shape and clearance, because chain width alone is not enough.

What this lesson shows

Check the whole end fitting.

A side section through the bail shows the chain's end ring stopping exactly where it meets the opening, without forcing. A smaller, compatible fitting then passes through with clearance. Drawings are simplified and not to scale.

Three quick takeaways

What to actually do when you shop

  • Check the bail's inside opening against the whole end fitting, including its shape and clearance.
  • Chain width alone is not enough; the end ring or clasp may be the widest part.
  • If it will not pass gently, do not force it; a jeweler can help find a compatible chain or suitable bail.

The pendant footage is AI-generated illustration. The bail section is a simplified diagram with no measurements. The narration uses an AI-generated voice. Captions are shown in the video.
