Lesson 11 · Diamonds & Engagement Rings · 47 seconds

Before you choose the wedding band, look under the diamond.

From the top, an engagement ring and a straight band can look like they will sit together. The gap, if any, is decided by the setting under the diamond.

What this lesson shows

The gap is a shape problem, not a sizing problem.

When the setting that holds the diamond sits low on the finger and is wider than the band, a straight band stops short. A contoured or curved band can follow that shape. A higher-set ring can leave room for a straight band. Some people prefer the small gap. All three are valid; the choice depends on how the two rings look together.

Three quick takeaways

What to actually do when you shop

  • Judge the stack from the side view, not just the top. The gap only appears from the side.
  • If the setting is wide at the base, a contoured band can let the two sit closer. If the setting sits higher, a straight band often fits.
  • There is nothing wrong with a small gap. Try the two designs together before you decide.

The rings in the lesson are 3D models used to show contact and clearance. They are not Aydins products and do not guarantee the fit of any specific pair. The lesson uses an AI-generated narration voice (Holden preset), 3D-rendered models and some AI-generated supporting footage. See the campaign manifest for full disclosure.

From the top, an engagement ring and a straight band can look like they'll sit together. But on some rings the setting under the diamond sits low and is wider than the band, so the band stops early and leaves a gap. Options: a curved or contoured band can follow the setting, a higher-set ring can leave room for a straight band, and some people don't mind a small gap. Try the two designs together. A top view can't tell you everything.
