What Sterling Silver Is
Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, almost always copper. The alloy mix matters because pure silver is too soft to hold its shape under daily wear. The added copper hardens the metal enough for jewelry without compromising silver's bright, mirror-like finish. Sterling is marked "925" inside the band, the universal stamp for the alloy.
Silver has been used for jewelry and coinage for over 5,000 years. It's one of the oldest precious metals in human use, and the metallurgy is well-understood by every jeweler in the world.
Why People Choose It
- Bright, classic finish. Sterling silver has a cool, bright white color that's distinct from white gold or platinum. It's the brightest of the white metals.
- Easy to repair and resize. Sterling can be cut, soldered, polished, and resized by any jeweler. The same ring can be maintained for generations.
- Affordable. Sterling is the most affordable of the precious metals. You get the look and weight of a real precious-metal ring at a fraction of the cost of gold or platinum.
- Hypoallergenic. Aydins sterling silver is nickel-free, so it's safe for sensitive skin.
- Holds real value. Sterling has intrinsic metal value that holds up better than industrial materials. It's a wear item that's also a small store of value.
The Tradeoff Worth Knowing
Sterling silver tarnishes. The 7.5% copper in the alloy reacts with sulfur in the air over time, producing a darker patina on the surface. This is normal, expected, and reversible. A silver polishing cloth or a quick polish at a jeweler restores the original bright finish. Tarnish doesn't damage the ring, it just changes the surface color until you polish it.
Sterling is also softer than gold or modern alternatives. It rates about 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale, similar to gold, which means it can pick up small scratches over years of daily wear. A jeweler can re-polish the ring any time to restore the surface.
Two practical notes:
- It can be resized. Sterling is one of the most workable metals for resizing. A jeweler can size up or down without issue.
- Avoid chlorine and harsh chemicals. Pool chlorine, hot tubs, and household cleaners speed up tarnishing significantly. Take the ring off before exposure.
Comfort Fit, Explained
Every Aydins sterling silver ring is built with a comfort-fit interior. The inside of the band is gently domed instead of flat, which reduces friction against the finger and makes the ring sit smoothly even when your hand swells slightly (heat, humidity, exercise, long flights).
One note on sizing. Comfort-fit rings often run a half size larger than standard fit, so if you've measured for a non-comfort-fit ring before, order a half size down. If you're unsure, our Ring Sizing Guide has three different ways to find your size at home.
Care & Cleaning
- Wipe the ring with a silver polishing cloth every few weeks to maintain the bright finish.
- For deeper tarnish, use a mild silver polish or warm water with a drop of dish soap, dry with a soft cloth.
- Take the ring off for swimming, hot tubs, and household cleaning. Chlorine and bleach accelerate tarnishing.
- Take the ring off before applying perfume, lotion, or sunscreen, then put it back on once those have absorbed.
- Store sterling in a soft pouch or anti-tarnish bag when you're not wearing it. Air exposure speeds up the tarnish process.
- If the surface picks up scratches over time, a jeweler can re-polish the ring to restore the original finish.
Lifetime Coverage
Every Aydins sterling silver ring is backed by a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects and the Aydins Lifetime Sizing Program. If your size ever changes, we get you into a ring that fits through the sizing program. Both are handled through our Returns & Exchanges portal, and the full warranty terms are listed on the Warranty tab.
The promise behind both is simple: a wedding band is supposed to last as long as the marriage. We build the ring to do that, and we back it for as long as you wear it.
