What Cobalt Chrome Is
Cobalt chrome is an alloy of cobalt and chromium, often with small additions of molybdenum or tungsten for additional strength. It's the same alloy used in hip and knee replacements, surgical instruments, and jet engine components. The properties that make it work in those applications, biological inertness, corrosion resistance, and exceptional strength, make it ideal for a wedding band that needs to handle real life without fuss.
Cobalt chrome is sometimes positioned as the modern alternative to white gold or platinum. The look is similar, the durability is significantly better, and the price is a fraction of either.
Why People Choose It
- Brighter than white gold, no plating required. Cobalt chrome has a naturally bright white color that's actually whiter than platinum or rhodium-plated white gold. The color is permanent, no re-plating needed every few years.
- Strong and scratch-resistant. Cobalt chrome rates about 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, which holds up well to daily wear without scratching as easily as silver, gold, or titanium.
- Light to moderate weight. Lighter than tungsten, denser than titanium. Most people describe cobalt chrome as having a substantial but not heavy feel on the finger.
- Hypoallergenic. Aydins cobalt chrome is medical-grade, the same alloy used for surgical implants, so it's safe for sensitive skin.
- Corrosion-proof. Doesn't rust, tarnish, or react with chemicals. Saltwater, chlorine, and sweat don't affect it.
The Tradeoff Worth Knowing
Cobalt chrome bends slightly under extreme force rather than shattering, which is an advantage over tungsten or ceramic in real-world impacts. But that same property means a hard impact can leave a small dent rather than just a scratch. Most owners read this as patina, not damage. A jeweler can polish out small surface marks if you want to restore the original finish.
Two practical notes:
- It can be cut off in an emergency. Cobalt chrome can be sawed through with standard ER tools, unlike tungsten or ceramic.
- Limited resizing. Cobalt chrome can be slightly resized (typically up to one size, depending on the style and width), but for larger size changes, the Aydins Lifetime Sizing Program replaces the ring rather than stretching it.
Comfort Fit, Explained
Every Aydins cobalt chrome ring is built with a comfort-fit interior. The inside of the band is gently domed instead of flat, which reduces friction against the finger and makes the ring sit smoothly even when your hand swells slightly (heat, humidity, exercise, long flights).
One note on sizing. Comfort-fit rings often run a half size larger than standard fit, so if you've measured for a non-comfort-fit ring before, order a half size down. If you're unsure, our Ring Sizing Guide has three different ways to find your size at home.
Care & Cleaning
- Clean with mild soap and warm water, dry with a soft cloth.
- Cobalt chrome handles ultrasonic cleaners and most jewelry cleaners safely, but plain soap and water is all it usually needs.
- No need to remove the ring for showering, swimming, or normal household chemicals. Cobalt chrome is inert.
- If the surface picks up scratches or small marks over time, a jeweler can re-polish the ring to restore the original finish.
Lifetime Coverage
Every Aydins cobalt chrome ring is backed by a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects and the Aydins Lifetime Sizing Program. If your size ever changes, we get you into a ring that fits through the sizing program. Both are handled through our Returns & Exchanges portal, and the full warranty terms are listed on the Warranty tab.
The promise behind both is simple: a wedding band is supposed to last as long as the marriage. We build the ring to do that, and we back it for as long as you wear it.
